It’s no secret that spending time outdoors can have a powerful impact on our wellbeing. At Ethical Property, we've understood this for over 25 years – providing access to gardens, terraces, or simply ensuring our workspaces are close to open spaces has always been part of our ethos.
Now, five years on from the COVID-19 pandemic, as working practices have shifted and hybrid models become the norm, the importance of outdoor space has only grown. Whether it’s taking a short break in the sunshine, having an informal catch-up with colleagues, or joining a gardening club, stepping outside during the workday can make a real difference – especially for those without easy access to nature at home.
A study from the Greener Communities Fund, a collaboration between NHS Charities Together and Hubbub, confirms just how crucial outdoor time is for our health. Surveying 2,000 UK adults, the research found that spending time outdoors not only boosts happiness but also leads to tangible health benefits:
- Improved mood (75%)
- Better immune response (36%)
- Improved sleep (28%)
- Reduced stress (38%)
Conversely, when people spend less time in nature than they would like, the effects are clear: 37% feel sluggish, 25% report feeling tired, and 20% become irritable. Many also say they’re less motivated to look after their general wellbeing. With results like these, it’s easy to see how connecting more people with green spaces could help reduce the strain on our healthcare system.
So whatever your reason – mental clarity, stress relief, social interaction, or just the joy of fresh air – having accessible outdoor space at work isn’t a luxury anymore. It’s as essential as high-speed Wi-Fi.
The next time you're looking for a new workspace, make sure outdoor space is on your checklist. Your health – and your productivity – will thank you for it.
