This week, a report on BBC Breakfast highlighted the increasingly important role that urban green spaces play in helping cities cope with extreme heat and reducing heat stress.
It’s a topic close to our hearts at Ethical Property.
As temperatures continue to rise, green spaces are proving to be much more than an attractive feature. Trees, plants and natural landscapes help cool the surrounding environment, improve air quality and create healthier places for people to live and work. Research featured in a 2024 BBC Studios Natural History Unit co-production with Wellcome demonstrated how nature can play a critical role in regulating heat and providing a natural cooling effect, with cities around the world investing in and expanding green spaces as part of their climate resilience strategies.
That’s one of the reasons why so many of our centres incorporate outdoor green spaces. While we may not be able to solve the climate crisis alone, we believe in being part of the solution rather than contributing to the problem.
For us, a workspace is about far more than the four walls of an office. The spaces between those walls matter too. Communal areas, gardens, courtyards and terraces create opportunities for connection, collaboration and wellbeing. They provide places to take a break, gather fresh ideas, enjoy a coffee with colleagues or simply spend a few moments in nature during a busy working day.
Our tenants regularly tell us how much they value these environments, and it’s easy to see why. Access to green space has been linked to reduced stress, improved mood and greater productivity. In a world where wellbeing is becoming increasingly important, creating workspaces that support both people and the planet makes perfect sense.
At Ethical Property, we are proud to offer places where organisations can thrive while staying connected to the natural world. As cities look for ways to adapt to rising temperatures, green spaces will continue to play a vital role in creating healthier, more sustainable urban environments.
