About the Company

The Ethical Property Company is one of the largest social businesses in the UK, owning and/or managing a total of 21 Centres across England, Scotland and Wales, and providing office, meeting, event and retail space to over 1000 organisations each year. Since our launch in 1998, investment from over 1350 shareholders has enabled the Company to build a property portfolio valued in excess of £45 million.

Although The Ethical Property Company was formally established in 1998, the concept was first conceived in 1982 when Andrew King bought 82 Colston Street, Bristol, in order to house some of the many co-operatives springing up across the city. 

Five Centres later, in 1998, after several years of research and development, Andrew King and Jamie Hartzell decided to form The Ethical Property Company PLC and each Centre was transferred into the new Company.

With the help of Triodos Bank our first Share Issue was then launched in May 1999 raising £1.72 million which was invested in new Centres in Bristol, London and Oxford. Three further Share Issues have funded additional Centres in Bath, Brighton, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Manchester and Sheffield.

Tenants within our Centres benefit from well designed and practical facilities, flexible contracts and the presence of similar organisations and individuals – all of whom can provide further support and partnership opportunities as well as a sense of community to otherwise potentially isolated groups.  

Each of our Centres are managed with the environment in mind and our financial, environmental and social performance is externally audited on an annual basis.

The UK Company is part of a wider international family of organisations providing similar services in the UK, Australia, Belgium, France and the US, and each Company is committed to our ‘Quintessentials’, a set of five management principles designed to ensure that all members conform to our common aims, values and our Triple Bottom Line approach.
