Our shareholders come from a wide variety of backgrounds,
reflecting the social diversity and core values of the Company.
Ours is the first company into which ethical unit trusts have made
a substantial investment that puts social and environmental values
at its core, and is not quoted on the stock exchange.
Rathbone Greenbank Investments and Morley Fund Management
are our largest shareholders and we also have a number of trusts
and foundations as investors. We have no majority shareholder and
only 42 investors with holdings over 50,000 shares. Our
smallest investors have only 100 shares.
In conjunction with our 2009 Annual General Meeting, held in April,
we invited our shareholders to participate in a survey of their
views on the company and their investment. Of our 1311
shareholders surveyed, our response rate was 43%, indicating an
engaged group of investors!
49% of our shareholders have chosen to manage their money ethically
through holding accounts with either Triodos Bank, the Co-operative
Bank, or both. A large proportion of our shareholders also
hold investments in Triodos’ Renewable Energy Fund (35%),
Café Direct (32%), Traidcraft (25%) or Good Energy (13%).
A large number of our shareholders (45%) hold Ethical Unit
Trusts in addition to this.
Our shareholders have historically chosen to invest in a company
that holds strong ethical values as it is a way to contribute to
positive social change. Our shareholders want to see us grow,
whilst maintaining our strong beliefs and core values. A full 82%
of those surveyed would consider investing in Ethical
Property’s next share issue, proof of their commitment to
smart and sustainable investment, and something that brings a new
dimension to the idea of owning shares: the wish to invest in
social change.
