Reviving The Old Music Hall

By May 2008, work will be complete on the Old Music Hall, a 15,000 sq ft centre for social change, regeneration and arts organisations in Oxford.

The centre will bring together over 25 organisations, offering them affordable rents, flexible management and facilities designed to meet their needs. As well as office space, there will be a wide variety of shared meeting spaces. These include a large training space, interview rooms, and several informal meeting spaces. There will also be an environmental ‘straw bale’ extension to the main building, opening out onto a garden. This will provide an exciting space for evening events, holding up to 30 people.

Tenants can take advantage of a wide range of shared services, allowing groups to share resources and reduce cost. Examples include a communal photocopier; shared IT infrastructure & potentially a communal server. There will also be an on-site property manager.

In addition to the financial benefits, sharing premises & services can lead to greater collaboration between groups. Informal networking; exchanging ideas/information; delivering joint projects and profile-raising can be much more effectively undertaken.

The centre has been designed to reduce its environmental impact as far as possible, and this will be reflected in the ongoing management. The electricity will be provided from 100% renewable sources; cycle parking & showers are being installed and a wide range of recycling & waste management facilities will be provided. Tenants will also be encouraged to look at reducing their own environmental footprint, and facilities developed to help them with this. This could include a video conferencing suite to reduce the need for travel!

The centre has been designed to achieve a high level of accessibility for both members of the public and individuals working within the building.

The Ethical Property PLC is a company based in Oxford supporting social change and regeneration organisations by developing and running multi-occupancy centres. We now own and manage 13 centres from Brighton to Edinburgh housing over 130 social change organisations. The company aims to deliver financial, social and environmental returns to its stakeholders.

The project is the result of an informal partnership between the Ethical Property Company and Charity Centre Oxford. Charity Centre Oxford was formed by a group of local organisations who felt that a building to house some of the many charities based in the city would be a great asset.
