The Brighton Eco-Centre
39-41
Surrey Street, Brighton, BN1 3PB
This small
centre, located in a prime city centre location opposite Brighton
Railway Station, was purchased from Brighton and Hove Council on
a 125 year lease. It opened in October 2003 after relatively minor
refurbishment and accommodates peace, environment and development
organisations.
As well as providing office space, the centre
also houses a resource centre run by Brighton Peace and Environment
Centre and a People's Funeral Centre run by Arka, who aim to offer
an alternative to traditional funerals. There is also a small amount
of meeting space, and a decked area at the rear of the property
providing an outdoor seating area for the summer.
Groups such as Harmony in the Community, the
Food Ethics Council, Mark Kenber (a climate change specialist) and
the Kaloko Trust have all taken office space. It also houses local
branches of Friends of the Earth, the Green Party, Sustrans and
Smart Moves.
