The Ethical Property Family

The Ethical Property Family consists of four organisations and one charity operating in four countries, providing property, IT and advice services to a wide variety of organisations. Each of these organisations is guided by the Quintessentials and works in accordance with our values and their social, financial and environmental performances are reviewed each year by the Audit Committee.

Ethical Property Foundation

The Ethical Property Foundation was founded in 2004 with the vision that buildings should be managed for the benefit of people and planet and the mission to support non-profits with expert property advice. To date the Foundation has advised 3500 clients on a pro-bono and consultancy basis and in February 2015 became the sole referral partner to the Charity Commission for land and property advice. In partnership with the Commission, the Foundation also runs the authoritative bi-annual Charity Property Matters Survey, the only UK property survey centred on the property needs and challenges of the voluntary sector which employs 820,000, owns £22bn of operating premises, with rent the 2nd biggest item of an annual sector spend of £40bn. (NCVO Civil Society Almanac 2015).

In 2015 the Foundation launched its new ethical workplace accreditation The Fairplace Award, in order  to promote its founding vision to the property industry. Major names have now achieved the Award, including Sodexo, RBS and EMCOR UK.

Ethical IT

Ethical IT is a partnership between The Ethical Property Company and JADe, established in January 2011 and committed to delivering high quality, cost effective and sustainable IT and telephony solutions to charities, social enterprises, community groups and voluntary organisations.
Their extensive experience within the social change sector in both the UK and Europe ensures that they appreciate the financial and technical limits within which organisations often work.

They aim to take the stress out of the management of IT and telephony, providing both Ethical Property tenants and external clients with transparent and reliable support, allowing them to focus on their core operations.

Ethical IT

ETIC (France)

Founded in 2010, Etic’s head office is based in Vaulx-en-Velin, a suburb of Lyon. In 2012, Etic opened its first Centre there, ‘Le Comptoir’ – a 3,800ft²/350m² coworking space for social entrepreneurs. Subsequently, in 2013, Etic helped a large insurance Company to create Le BeeoTop, a 65,000ft²/6,000m² office building for charities and NGOs in Paris, a building that Etic now manages.

Etic has developed and invested in four further projects, raising over €3m from 100 ethical shareholders as well as €2.8m from three institutions through the subsidiaries owning the buildings alongside Etic.

Etic’s investors are small private shareholders including employees and tenants, as well as business angels and social investment funds. Ethical Property Europe has invested €180k and The Ethical Property Company in the UK have invested €10k.

Ethical Property Australia

Our newest family member, Ethical Property Australia (EPA), started trading in November 2013. Run by the UK Company’s former Property Director, Peter Allen, and based in Melbourne EPA is a joint venture with Donkey Wheel Trust, a charitable foundation supporting social enterprise.

In their first full year of trading, the Company continued to build on the solid foundation of their management contract at Donkey Wheel House, a 32,000ft²/3,000m² historic building in Melbourne (left) - home to some of Melbourne’s most innovative social enterprises and not-for-profits.

Demand has been identified for similar properties in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and beyond and they are now working closely with The Difference Incubator to set up a property fund, which would make it easier to raise investment. The first property to be owned by the fund will be a 32,000ft²/3,000m² building in Canberra, which will provide permanent office space to tenants based there as well as temporary desk and meeting space for campaigning organisations.

Ethical Property Europe

Ethical Property Europe was founded in 2007, when the UK Company, in coalition with a group of Environmental NGOs and Campaigners in Brussels, formed the co-op, Maison du Développement Durable SCRL. Through their collaborative efforts, they identified, purchased and refurbished Mundo-b, Ethical Property Europe's first Centre, on the edge of the city's European quarter in Brussels. In 2010 they opened a Centre in Namur followed by a second Centre in Brussels in 2014.

They now manage 108,000ft²/10,000m² of space in total supporting 130 social change organisations, while their conference and meeting facilities host more than 7,000 meetings a year and are increasingly becoming one of the most popular venues for social change organisations in Belgium. A further Centre in Antwerp is due to open early 2017 and will eventually be home to 25 tenants in a further 24,000ft²/2,200m² of space.
